Snohomish Education Foudation 2008 Annual Walk-a-Thon
Raises $18,000 For Snohomish Students
More than 330 supporters of education in Snohomish braved rainy weather on May 3rd to raise a record $18,000 as part of the Snohomish Education Foundation’s annual Walk-A-Thon at the High School Memorial Stadium.
Education Foundation Executive Director Virginia Becker said this year’s event attracted twice as many participants as last year and more than five times the number who participated in the Foundation’s first Walk-A-Thon in 2006.
“We wish to thank all the people who came out to walk for education, the assistance of the SHS Honor Society, the first-time participation of the Snohomish Panther Band, and our generous sponsors, Cadyville Carriage House, Top Food & Drug, McDaniel’s ‘Do It Center’, and Saxton Bradley.”
Becker said, “We were happy that several teachers who have been recipients of Education Foundation classroom grants and scholarships participated in this year’s event and spoke about the difference our work has made for their students and to them personally—how our efforts have advanced educational opportunities for Snohomish students.”
As part of the Walk-A-Thon fundraising activities, students at all Snohomish schools compete to see who can raise the most money. This year, the High School raised the most funds and was awarded the traveling Trophy and a Smart Board and accessories worth $5,000, donated by Saxton Bradley Corporation. This year’s best individual fundraisers were SHS student Elizabeth Jusko, Valley View Middle School student Cloe Townsend, and students of Mrs. Taylor’s classroom from Cathcart Elementary School.
Celebrating its 22nd year of supporting education in Snohomish, the Education Foundation raises funds for Snohomish school children — to pay for everything from shoes for needy kids to college scholarships for deserving SHS grads who otherwise would not have the means to further their education. The Foundation has been able to fund many classroom grants over the years to assist with needed materials and programs for the schools.
Snohomish citizens who recognized the need for greater support of public schools and our children established the non-profit organization in 1986. The Foundation has awarded classroom grants totaling $165,300 since 1996 — and $27,000 this year alone. It has provided over $364,000 in scholarships to SHS graduates since 1996 — including more than $92,000 this year. The Foundation also assists with medical services for special needs students that otherwise would not have been provided
